Syncing Notice

Warning, do not sync these iPads with your personal computer. They were activated and configured on an iPad in the ITS offices and syncing them with another system will cause iTunes to wipe all content, removing apps that were specifically purchased for use by the Abroad Program.

In the event a wipe does occur, the system can be restored, however this must be done in the ITS offices. Due to export taxes and the logistics of shipping a system between countries, this can only be done when the system returns between terms.

Setting up FaceTime for video conferencing

You can use FaceTime to communicate with friends and family while you are abroad, however you will need wireless access to the internet and a friend with another device capable of FaceTime (ie. iPad 2 and iPhone 4). Find the Settings icon on the desktop. On the left hand side menu, there is an entry for FaceTime, click this and on the right hand side enter your Apple ID and password. If you don't already have an Apple ID, there is a link to create a new account.

Once you have created your account, return to the home screen and launch FaceTime. The first time you launch it, FaceTime verify your Apple ID. If you haven't already added your contacts to the list, press the small + icon in the top right to add a new one. You will need either their Apple ID (iPad 2) or phone number (iPhone). Once a contact has been added, one simply needs to select the name from the list of contacts to initiate a new FaceTime call.

Changing the iTunes account so you can download apps with your account

If you would like to download apps, books, or media (music/videos), you will need to do so with your own Apple account. When you launch iTunes, iBooks, or the App Store, you will see a button on the bottom lefthand side of the first page that is labeled account. When you press this is will ask you to either log out of the currently logged in account, or to provide credentials for your account. Log out of the account that is currently signed in and sign in with your own Apple ID. If you don't already have an Apple ID, there is an option to create a new account.

Once logged in, you can download any apps, books, or media you choose. You will need to provide credit card information in order to purchase any items. Apps and books will be tied to your account and can be downloaded elsewhere, however music can only be downloaded once. Once returned at the end of the term, the iPads will be wiped, removing all data saved during the term. ITS is not responsible for transfering information off the iPad, this responsibility lies with the individual who purchased it.

Checking your email

On the main screen of the iPad is a link to the Centre College web email system (Microsoft Outlook Web App). ITS recommends using this link to maintain privacy of your email, however if you would like to configure the iPad email app, you can follow the directions here. You will be unable to restrict access to your email if configured like this, however multple individuals can configure their email in this way if so inclined.

What to do when the iPad is lost, stolen, or damaged

If the iPad is lost, stolen, or damaged, inform the program chair immediately and have them notify ITS. If the device is missing, but in range of a WiFi hotspot, it is possible that ITS can locate it using Apple's MobileMe service. If the device is damaged, ITS will investigate the possibilities of using the AppleCare plan, however most likely nothing will be able to be done until the unit is returned to campus.
