Accessing Jupiter

No matter where you are, from any computer, you can access the files that you have stored on your Jupiter server space. We repeat this tip at the beginning of each academic year as a reminder about the simple steps to follow so that you can get to your documents and data no matter where you are. This tip is definitely worth saving in some easy to find location so you’ll have it the next time you are away from campus.

Accessing Jupiter From Anywhere!

Did you know that you can access your files (that are on your Jupiter server space) from home, or anywhere? MAC and PC users can do this from any machine!

Method I: Easy Method

  • This method is a bit buggy if you use anything but Internet Explorer and Windows

XP (MAC users can only download from Jupiter to their home computer using this method and can’t upload back to their server space)

  • Why do this? To see what’s in your server space
  • Why do this? You can download a file or a folder
  • You can easily drag/drop folders from your home computer to your server space and vice versa.
  • You don’t need any installed software to do this.
  1. Enter the following into your web browser: ftp://jupiter.centre.edu
  2. You will then be prompted for your username and password. In the first line, put centre/your username (whatever that is) and then in the second box, put in your password.
  3. Click on the folder containing your files. For U: Drive files, click on either Faculty or Staff, depending on your primary designation and navigate to your files. Click once on the file or folder you want to move to your home computer. Then, drag it to your desktop, or other desired location.
  4. Once the files are transferred to your home computer, you can open and work on them locally.
  5. When you’re done working on the files, you will need to transfer them back to the server space (of course, if you want to). This time, just drag and drop from your home computer back into your folder that’s open in Internet Explorer. If you have trouble with this, you can always just save these files onto a disk and bring them back into work with you.
  • Note: You cannot open the file directly on the server, work on it, and save it. You HAVE to download it to your home computer first before opening it.

Method II: Full control

  • You need a program, FileZilla - The free FTP solution,

installed on your home computer, which will allow you to transfer files from one place to another. Check out http://filezilla-project.org (and then click on Download to find the free program for your operating system).

  1. Once your FTP client is installed, you only need the following information:
  2. The name of the server to which you want to connect >> jupiter.centre.edu (this is the Host IP Address)
  3. Your login name needs to be typed exactly like this >> centre\yourusername
  4. Your normal network password
  5. Once you've successfully connected via FTP, you will see a group of folders.
  6. To locate your U: drive (Jupiter) folder, click on Faculty or Staff, as desired, and then find your own name in the list of folders. To locate your W: drive folder (for your website), click on websites, then web, then your own folder name after that.
  7. Once you’ve located the file/folder you’re looking for, you can click once on the

file/entire folder you want to retrieve and drag it to your desktop. Then, when you want to put the file back, you can drag it back into this space. REMEMBER: any changes you make to the file will be overwritten, so be sure you want to do this before you drag it back. Also, be careful not to drag that folder within another folder.

I recommend transferring a file that you don’t care about until you get the hang of using FTP programs or transferring files around. These programs are easy to use, but it can be a little scary, if you’re not comfortable with knowing where files are on your U: drive.
