Accessing your server and web space with a Mac

Faculty

Server Space

Server space is the network storage Centre provides to you for general data storage. This area can be accessed from most, if not all, computers on campus making it easier to move from your desktop to the labs. Also, the data stored in your server space is backed up by our system to prevent data lose.

* Click Go on the desktop toolbar
* Select Connect to Server
* In the window type the following in the "Server Address" field: smb://faculty/faculty/username
* A login prompt will appear, enter your login name and normal network password and hit OK.

The contents of your server space should then display; also, a Faculty network icon will appear on your desktop.

Web Space

Web space is provided to everyone on campus to create a web site accessible from the internet and on campus.

* Click Go on the desktop toolbar
* Select Connect to Server
* In the window type the following the the Server Address field: smb://web/web/username
* A login prompt will appear, enter your login name and normal network password and hit OK

The contents of your web space should then display; also, a Web network icon will appear on your desktop.

When you have deployed a web site in your space, the URL will be of the form: http://web.centre.edu/username

Organizational or Departmental Web Space

Web space is provided to recognized campus organizations and all deparments to create web sites that are accessible from the internet and on campus. If you have a student that needs access to an organizational or departmental web space to do updates, you need to enter a Helpdesk call stating the name of the student and the URL of the site. If a student issues this request we will require that a faculty advisor/supervisor confirm the request.

* Click Go on the desktop toolbar
* Select Connect to Server
* In the window type the following the the Server Address field: smb://web/web/sitename
* A login prompt will appear, enter your login name and normal network password and hit OK.

The contents of your web space should then display; also, a Web network icon will appear on your desktop.

When you have deployed a web site, the URL will be of the form: http://web.centre.edu/sitename

Access from off campus

Through the web: To access your files and folders in your server space though a web browser enter https://files.centre.edu into your browser or go to CentreNet (https://cn.centre.edu) and click on the "FileCentre Web Access" icon. You'll use your standard username and password to login. You can download and update files from the browser interface. If you need to move a large number of files it might be more convenient to use the SFTP instructions below.

Through SFTP:" To access your files and folders in your server space, web space or organization/departmental space you can use an SFTP client like Cyberduck. Just download and install Cyberduck (free) or another SFTP program and use the following information.

Server: or Address: files.centre.edu
Username: jane.user
Password: normalnetworkpassword
Protocol "SFTP"  (This must be set or it will not work)
Once logged to access your server space (your U: drive):
* Click home
* Click username
* Drag and drop any files you need to update or retrieve
* When you're done just close the program
Once logged to access your web space:
* Click web
* Click username
* Drag and drop any files you need to update or retrieve
* When you're done just close the program
Once logged to access your organizational or departmental space:
* Click web
* Click sitename
* Drag and drop any files you need to update or retrieve
* When you're done just close the program

Staff

Organizational or Departmental Web Space

If you need access to an organizational or departmental web space to do updates, you need to have the Faculty/Staff advisor/supuervisor to enter a Helpdesk call stating the your name and the URL of the site.

* A login prompt will appear, enter your login name and normal network password and hit OK.

The contents of your web space should then display; also, a Web network icon will appear on your desktop.

Access from off campus

To access your files and folders in your server space, web space or organization/departmental space from off campus, you can use an FTP client like [Cyberduck]. Just download and install Cyberduck (free) or another FTP programs and use the following information.

Server: or Address: web.centre.edu

Password: normalnetworkpassword
Once logged to access your server space:
* Click students
* Click username
* Drag and drop any files you need to update or retrieve

* Click username
* Drag and drop any files you need to update or retrieve
* When you're done just close the program
Once logged to access your organizational or departmental space:
* Click web
* Click sitename
* Drag and drop any files you need to update or retrieve
* When you're done just close the program
