Computer won't power on

Is your computer not turning on when you press the power button? Have you tried plugging the power cord into different outlets but to no avail? Are you at your wits end as to what is going on?

Believe it or not, this is a fairly common problem, so you're not alone. This situation usually crops up after an electrical storm, and can be confusing to diagnose and fix. Even if you have your computer plugged into a surge protector, lightning can still damage your machine. The solution to this problem however, is simple.

To correct this problem, simply unplug your power cord from the back of your computer. Wait about 30 seconds to 1 minute, and then plug the cord back in again. Now turn your computer on. If it still doesn't work, repeat this process once more. If you have a laptop, unplugging the power cord in addition to removing the battery usually fixes this.

If you've done this a couple times and your computer still won't turn on, swap power cords with your monitor. If your computer will power up now, then [submit a Helpdesk call] (we're assuming you are reading this from another users machine) explaining what you have done and that it appears you need a new power cord. If swapping the cords fails to solve the problem, then [submit a Helpdesk call] and explain what has been happening. Its likely at this point that the computer's power supply has been fried. Someone from ITS will come and look at the computer to make sure that is the only component that has been damaged.
